What Is Sex Addiction?

Sexual behavior is a natural and healthy part of the human experience. However, when sexual urges, fantasies, or behaviors become compulsive and interfere with daily life, relationships, and emotional well-being, it may signal a deeper issue: sex addiction.

Sex addiction—sometimes referred to as hypersexual disorder or compulsive sexual behavior disorder—is defined by an ongoing pattern of sexual thoughts and behaviors that feel out of control. Individuals struggling with this condition often find themselves caught in a cycle of intense urges, temporary relief through sexual behavior, and subsequent feelings of guilt.

Though not officially classified as a distinct mental disorder in the DSM-5, sex addiction is increasingly recognized by mental health professionals and has been included in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) under the label “Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder".
